GALWAY FESTIVAL 2018 [JULY 30th -- AUG 5th] -- DAY SEVEN SUNDAY

DAY SEVEN SUNDAY

Sunday is our final day of action here at Galway and the meeting will begin at 2:15pm with a 2m Handicap Hurdle.

The feature race today is the Ahonoora Handicap over 7f and will be under way at 3:55, where 16 runners face the starter for this sixty thousand euro contest.

As mentioned on day one our recent years have focused on the horses from trainer Dermot Weld all week but it's not been the best of meetings this time and indeed on the final day he only has only TWO runners declared. I feel that perhaps time has caught up with him.

Still it's only once a year and plenty of fun to be had all the same. Since there's only the 2 runners for Sunday we will have a good look at some of the other races today as well.

Going -- NH - Soft, Flat - Soft to Heavy.

Weather Forecast -- A high of 18C with a good chance of rain during the day sadly.

DAY SEVEN SELECTIONS;

2:15 -- 2m 160y Handicap Hurdle.

The opening race on the final day of this years festival is a 2m+ Handicap Hurdle and with 20 runners will look at backing two against the field. Top weight HEARTS ARE TRUMPS [4th 8/1] has a win last time out but will do well to give the weight away to the likes of INGLEBY MACKENZIE [6th 8/1] and ALWAYS RESOLUTE [Fell 12/1] against the rest.

2:45 -- 3m 60y Handicap Hurdle.
The staying handicap hurdle can go to LAREENA [Non Runner] who was runner up last time out and steps forward in trip will take that one along with LIZZIE'S CHAMP [WON 11/4F] who has form over the trip against the rest.

3:20 -- 7f Maiden.

A 7f Maiden and one of Dermot Weld's runners here today appears which is QUEEN MIA [8th 4/1] and we wish him all the best with this one as he's had little luck at all this week.

3:55 -- 7f Handicap.

Our feature race of the final day, the Ahonoora Handicap over 7f with 16 declared. Will be interesting to see if any non runners as 2nd reserve WAITINGFORTHEDAY has a string of wins and will be popular if getting a run. -- Non Runner

If that one doesn't make it then I still like the chances of BARAWEEZ [7th 14/1] who also ran earlier in the week and is a regular here, DREAM WALKER [9th 5/1] is another course and distance winner so those two against the field in the big race of the day for us.

4:30 -- 2m 6f 111y Chase.
Some decent horses here for this non handicap chase where SUB LIEUTENANT [WON 5/4F] ran well to come 5th earlier in the week and this should be a lot easier off level weights. KALONDRA  [Fell 7/1] has Tom Scudamore in the saddle and looks worth a punt in the place markets too.

5:00 -- 2m 2f 54y Handicap Chase.

We take LISTEN DEAR  [2nd 9/2] with WOODLAND OPERA  [9th 10/1] against the field in a good looking handicap chase.

5:30 -- 1m 5f 186y Handicap.

Our other Dermot Weld runner here on the final day is DAYS WITHOUT END  [3rd 25/1] and we hope to end this week on a winner although looks a big outsider at 33/1 so a place would do us today. So no winner but nice place return, doesn't count for our stats but happy with a good return today from Dermot Weld's two runners all the same.

6:00 -- 2m Pro-Am Flat Race
BEAUTIFUL CITI  [2nd 9/4]
.

Hopefully we can at least end the week with a winner. Results will be updated here later on Sunday afternoon.

D Weld p/l for week at SP +/-  -15.023 [Finished]

2 selections today; 8th / 3rd.
Overall week p/l to date at SP +/-  -0.273 [Finished]

12 other selections -- 2 wins 2 NRs returns 8.00pts

down 4 points so the smallest of loss overall for the week to SP returns. Been a good week though, enjoyed it.

Summer, Horse Racing, Galway, Irish Women, Guinness = Life IS Good.
And sadly that's all from Galway for this years festival, plenty of exciting racing still to go this year but I hope you enjoyed yourselves. I did despite the results ... and I'll be back in 2019.
