AFC WIMBLEDON v FLEETWOOD TOWN -- L1 SEASON OPENER SATURDAY 4th AUGUST

At last we can look forward to the start of another season in League One for the Dons. While the World Cup was a nice distraction in the summer the real exciting news was watching the new stadium site being cleared ready for our return to Plough Lane (pic below), and now we look ahead to what should be our final full season at Kingsmeadow.

Plenty of optimism and a host of new signings who appear to have begun to fit together based on the pre season friendly performances not that too much should be read into those. Opening our season against Fleetwood who are now managed by Joey Barton so that will be interesting to see how he copes with Management given his fiery nature on the pitch, though Roy Keane has proved that doesn't always apply either. They beat us home and away last season and have some financial backers therefore could be one of the dark horses in this league. Our main focus of course continues to be off the field but it would be nice to get off to a good start and not flirt with relegation as we did for most of last season.

(Last 6 matches in their respective leagues, starting with most recent)

Fleetwood Town -- WLLLWL

CORRESPONDING RESULTS FROM LAST SEASON;

Updates will be published with team news and more news as and when it comes through. Waiting to see who is given the captain's armband with Fuller leaving and no announcement yet. Also sad to learn that Jon Meades had to retire at the age of 26, he was sponsored by us for the last three years and we've moved that onto the new signing Ben Purrington. Good luck Ben.

AFC Wimbledon have signed Rod McDonald from Coventry City for an undisclosed fee and brought in Doncaster Rovers left-back Tyler Garratt on loan. Centre-back McDonald featured 41 times for the Sky Blues last season after joining from Northampton. Wimbledon had been looking to strengthen in defence following the retirement of left-back Jon Meades on Tuesday, and boss Neal Ardley has now made 10 signings in the summer transfer window.

H/T Score – 0 - 0

First Half Comment;

A lively first 45 mins for the Dons, plenty of pressure alas no goals yet. But with load's of new signings and a new defence in place we look solid, and just need to remain calm. Given we are the away side, I think Joey Barton will have the harder half time rant than Neal Ardley and we look forward to a more productive second half.

F/T Score – 0 - 1 (Pigott 60')

Match Summary;

Feed the Pig and he will score. One up for the Dons on the hour as Joe Pigott scores, and Barton looks pig sick as the ball is stabbed over the line, the travelling Dons fans go nuts. A flurry of subs by both teams but the Dons look the stronger outfit and I am impressed already by our new keeper on loan from Millwall.

Good opening day win, 3 points towards safety, plenty of action and we've ruined Joey's day. Happy start.

My Man of the Match – Tom King.

Referee -- Our referee for this important League One fixture has been confirmed as MARK HEYWOOD who hails from West Yorkshire, and can be card happy gave out 123 Yellows last year also took charge of our 3-2 win against Walsall so can't be all that bad.

Attendance – 3,236.
