Welcome to Kempton Park racecourse here for another evening meeting as we return to regular action on the all weather flat track under the lights but behind closed doors for the time being. We will keep blogging throughout 2020 till the end of the year. British horse racing has safely returned behind closed doors as part of a phased return for the sport. In doing so we will be introducing strict protocols designed to safeguard everyone's health and well being and to ensure that racing can take place safely behind closed doors. These measures have been developed in consultation with government and public health officials to help keep those attending safe and include:
- A three stage health check that all attendees on courses will have to pass;
- Strict social distancing measures on course
- Detailed new guidance for all participants on how they will have to do things differently on course in order that we can race safely and mitigate any risks.
Back to the horse racing all results here are reported to 1pt at Starting Prices (SP) our last meeting here a week ago, where sadly we dropped a few more points, we are now into another lockdown during November and after meeting #22 another loss sadly with some unfortunate near misses we found ourselves in a loss for the year to a figure of -66.015 points, results are always recorded to SP we will aim to get us back into the winners enclosure again soon and see further improvement in the results.
Throughout the year we will keep up with our occasional lay opportunities of anticipated short priced favourites too. Naturally we will keep these results separately from the handicap figures we had been fairly successful with our selections throughout last year managed to get plenty of favourites beat so we finished on 40/54 (74%). We reset the counters for 2020 and will be continuing this throughout the year again. Currently a decent start with plenty of short priced favourites getting beat, more short priced favs beat so we now have stats of 28/40 (70%) after the latest meeting.
This week we look forward to another Wednesday evening meeting during this interrupted period, this will be meeting #23 for the 2020 midweek season. Tonight we shall be expecting a nine race card with four handicaps to enjoy, and will also include the Listed Hyde Stakes [18:55] too. The action will now commence at 16:25 with a six furlong nursery handicap event and we should end the card around about 20:30 with our final handicap contest over just under eleven furlongs [1m 2f 219yds].
Here's a link to this Wednesday's race card; RACECARD
Going and Weather -- The going on the polytrack surface is described as 'standard to slow' and the current weather forecast for this Wednesday is for a lot of chilly weather but mostly a sunny day expected the temperature to reach around 12C by the time the meeting gets underway a sure sign that Winter is coming now and we continue with the latest lockdown.Here are our handicap selections for tonight;
16:25 Unibet New Instant Roulette Nursery (2yo)
6f [Class 5 12 runners]
A winner in September at Wolves LIBERTINE BELLE [2nd 16/5f] was placed here in a similar looking Nursery contest and she is given another chance off the same mark. While SHAYKHOON [10th 9/1] has been well supported in the betting for both his maiden events to date and might be better than his handicap mark here, it's an open contest to start us off with.
18:55 British Stallion Studs EBF Hyde Stakes (Listed)
1m [Class 1 11 runners]
Although off the racecourse for the last two years ALMODOVAR [5th 9/1] was contesting a Group 1 in France when last seen and finished runner up there [Prix D'Ispahan @ Longchamp, May 2018], clearly something amiss since then but if anything like his old self should win this. MARSHALL DAN [Non Runner] steps up from handicaps for this and has been winning regularly in that sphere and deserves his opportunity for some 'black type' and is a big price option tonight.
19:25 Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Handicap
1m 7f 218y [Class 2 9 runners]
A stayers event here and recent Doncaster winner ON TO VICTORY [7th 9/2] is an interesting selection, won a big field November Handicap and does look a class above most of these. Rock Eagle hasn't won for two years and might need to drop down the handicap too so we are going with ISLAND BRAVE [3rd 9/1] who won at a big price at Ascot, wasn't able to get a blow in either of the York Ebor, or the Cesarewitch at Newmarket over further but this trip and smaller field must play to his strengths.
20:00 Try Our New Super Boosts At Unibet Handicap
1m 3f 219y [Class 2 6 runners]
Only six here headed by JOHNNY DRAMA [WON 11/8f] came good at this track at the beginning of November and in this company might well go in again. Wasn't stopping that day and no reason to think that this extra furlong would be a huge problem, has been highly tried for his current owners, King Power Racing, and the small field with possible lack of early pace might play into his hands. We would also be interested in TULIP FIELDS [3rd 11/2] the filly has form over a variety of trips and surfaces, and her win at Doncaster makes her interesting again here for trainer Mark Johnston.
20:30 Unibet Casino Deposit 10 Get 40 Bonus Handicap
1m 2f 219y [Class 5 14 runners]
Three runs here for TORBELLINO [7th 5/1] have yielded a 4th, 3rd and 2nd placing for the John Best trained filly so maybe it's time to win now. It's an open race so MY POEM [WON 7/1] also comes into the equation despite being a maiden still Sir Michael Stoute's 3yo filly has place form before although you have to believe that her last outing when out the back at Wolves was something amiss and not a complete lack of form. She returns after a month break hopefully the master trainer can get her back on the right path with Ryan Moore taking over on board.
Staked -- 10 points. Returns -- 11.375 points.
Results will appear here later during Wednesday evening. This season we started afresh and will try hard to stop going well behind but all results are accurate and recorded to SP returns to a 1pt win stake only and updated each meeting. A disappointing 2020 so far now sees us behind after meeting #22 to the tune of -66.015 overall and we need some more winners to see this reduced soon. Well a winner helps in the last, stops the losing run, only small profit but every little helps. Down to the tune of -64.64 overall now, with about 5 weeks to go.
Lays -- 28/40. We had a good season last year with the lays, aiming at favourites and not afraid to take on short odds on shots too. The plan will be for at least one or two each meeting and we will keep those results separate from the handicaps, managed to get all three beaten last time.
