COVID-19 (Coronavirus) update February

COVID_FEB_WEEK_3_NEWSLETTER copy

The coming weeks and months are likely to prove critical as the world strives to overcome the continued challenges presented by COVID-19.

Unfortunately, whilst Australia and New Zealand have so far successfully prevented significant levels of infection, both countries are currently experiencing regional lockdowns in response to localised outbreaks. In South Africa, thankfully, cases are dropping rapidly, however the country is still under a significant level of restrictions. And in the northern hemisphere countries that host parkrun events, whilst the vaccine roll-out is progressing, the point at which large public gatherings may resume is far from clear.

Next week, the UK Prime Minister will set out his road map for the gradual easing of restrictions and a return to normal life. Clearly, this announcement will have significant implications for the reopening of parkrun across our 1,100 UK locations, and we very much hope that there will be a place for outdoor physical activity events as the country gets back on its feet.

AFC WIMBLEDON v HULL CITY -- 20/21 LEAGUE ONE - PLOUGH LANE 27th FEBRUARY 2021

AFC Wimbledon vs Hull City

Saturday 27th February 2021 3:00pm

AFC Wimbledon will 'host' their next home game back in Wimbledon against Hull City at the Plough Lane Stadium. Still no prospect of any fans being allowed in to watch during the latest Government national lockdown which is clearly the same for us all but frustrating given the journey we had to reach our return home. On the plus side though many people (including myself) have received at least one dose of the various covid-19 vaccines via the NHS. Maybe this is our route back to some sort of 'normality'. The Dons managed a midweek win 1-0 against Gillingham, while Hull City also had a midweek home game against Ipswich Town where they lost 1-0. A win this afternoon for the Dons would hopefully keep us out of the bottom four relegation places but it's beginning to look like any four from seven with a gap opening up to the teams above. Wimbledon confirmed the appointment of head coach Mark Robinson also recently signed former Spurs youth team product Shayon Harrison who was taken off on his debut against Peterborough and hopefully that injury is not as severe as it first seemed no Ollie Palmer still which has been a longer term issue while the Dons will be boosted by the return of midfielder Callum Reilly for this weekend’s game, with the former Gillingham man having set the midweek game out against his former club due to a hamstring problem.
League One Season 20/21
Onto today's game itself this Saturday in League One and our opponents today, Hull City are flying high at the top end of the table, and look to be one of the favourites to return to the Championship this season. A key win against them would be appreciated. Hull City are led by Grant McCann. The Tigers currently occupy 3rd place in the League One table after their defeat to Ipswich midweek, with 53 points they are hot on the heels of the automatic places held by Lincoln and Peterborough. Hull City's first team regular Richie Smallwood remains a long-term absentee ahead of Saturday's game. Mallik Wilks is their top scorer this season with 16 goals so we need to keep him quiet today.

Most Recent League Games [Tuesday night]
AFC Wimbledon 1 - 0 Gillingham
Hull City 0 - 1 Ipswich Town

Head to Head
Our head to head form against Hull City is brand new having never met before this season in our current form. The reverse fixture back in October saw us lose 1-0 to a Keane Lewis-Potter goal deep into first half stoppage time at the KCOM stadium.

Starting XI's [now confirmed]

Selected Bets On This Match;
  • Over 2.5 goals in 1st half @6/1.
  • Penalty Taken @11/4. Yes
  • Over 3.5 goals in match @5/2.

Half Time
Score - 0 - 2    [Magennis 24' pen  Burke 43']

First Half Comments;
Kick off at Plough Lane as Wimbledon get us away in the sunshine, not surprising that the opening ten minutes see Hull dominate but nothing to show for it so far. Good. More of the same from the visitors winning plenty of corners but the defence holds out and the Dons begin to get into the game a bit more. A penalty awarded to Hull on 24 minutes is scored by Josh Magennis straight down the middle 0-1. After that disappointment the home side do settle again and have a bit more of the play, and just when I thought we might get back into it as half time loomed Hull City doubled their lead 0-2 with a goal from Reece Burke after a mistake by the Dons keeper.

Full Time Score - 0 - 3    [Wilks 64' pen]

Match Summary;
No chance when you give away soft penalties and easy goals like we did today. Too weak and back in the relegation mix once more having done so well midweek. Next two games are very important a trip away to Shrewsbury and then it's off up to Blackpool.

My Man of the Match - No one in a Dons shirt.

Attendance - Sadly still no one for the time being. Maybe sometime later this year would be nice, after all we've a new stadium to celebrate in 2021.

Today's Referee - Today's match officials for this weekend will be Mr Craig Hicks from Surrey, last took charge of us in the Football League Trophy against Brighton (u21s) a 2-0 win for the Dons. His assistants are Michael Webb and Ryan Whitaker and our fourth official this afternoon will be Darren Blunden
.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUM, LOVE YOU AND STILL MISS YOU SO MUCH Xxx

A VERY SPECIAL BIRTHDAY WISH FOR MY MUM. WISH YOU WERE STILL HERE WITH US  Xx

Always loving you Mum x

Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us everyday.
Unseen, Unheard, but always near.
Always loved, Always missed.

February is always a sad time for me, with both Mum and Dad having birthdays so shall be making a special trip to the Rose Gardens at the Crematorium this weekend, usually visit and stay for a while to have a talk with Mum and Dad and will hopefully be dry enough for a longer stay. Will get some new photo's of the roses if they are out yet but might be too early for flowers.

Sadly only have a few older photo's of you Mum, including this one opposite which you wrote a lovely message on to Dad xx. Those that I do have are always out on display at home along with Dads too, your black and white wedding photo's with all the Owen/Tyler family are loved. We are alike in that neither of us particularly enjoyed having our photo taken really, so there's hardly any of me either which is sad as would have enjoyed having at least one of us together. At least I have you in my heart, and memories.

Thank you for being my Mum xXx

Miss you so much Mum, lots of love always and forever. xXx

KEMPTON PARK HORSE RACING 2021 - MEETING #6 WEDNESDAY 24th FEBRUARY

Kempton Park at sunset
Welcome to Kempton Park racecourse here for another season of evening meetings following the events on a Wednesday night on the all weather flat track under the lights. We will be blogging throughout 2021 till the end of the year. Dropped a few points here last time out, but we are still ahead as February comes towards an end. We have this past weekend had plenty of other sporting action to enjoy, AFC Wimbledon have confirmed the replacement head coach with the appointment of Mark Robinson and played high flying Peterborough United at the weekend losing 3-0 then had a morale boosting midweek success winning 1-0 at home to Gillingham. No six nations rugby until next weekend plus we are only a few more weeks away till the Cheltenham NH festival.

Back to the horse racing all results here are reported to 1pt at Starting Prices (SP) we will be keeping a rolling record of profit/loss all the way through from January till the Boxing Day King George fixture in December. Coming to the end of the first couple of months of meetings we have a healthy +44.74 profit and will continue to keep a record to SP throughout 2021.
Kempton Park Racecourse
Throughout the year we will keep up with our occasional lay opportunities of anticipated short priced favourites too. Naturally we will keep these results separately from the handicap figures we had been fairly successful with our selections throughout last year managed to get plenty of favourites beat so we finished on 33/49 (67.34%). We reset the counters for 2021 and will be continuing this throughout the year again. Currently standing at 8/11 (73%) after the latest meeting and we shall see how things progress during the year ahead.

This week we look forward to the sixth Wednesday evening meeting of the year and sadly it's still being held behind closed doors as we remain in the latest national lockdown. Boris might update that during this week but for tonight we shall be expecting an eight race card with the final handicap divided into two divisions now making seven to review. Our action will now commence at 16:40 with our first handicap for apprentices over six furlongs, we should end the card around about 20:15 with a seven furlong handicap event. There are no noted feature races tonight.

Here's a link to this Wednesday's race card; RACECARD
Going and Weather -- The going on the polytrack surface is described as 'standard to slow' and the current weather forecast for this Wednesday is for a warmer than usual night for the time of year and the temperature will reach a high of 14C tonight.

Here are our handicap selections for tonight;
16:40  Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Apprentice Handicap
6f  [Class 4  5 runners]
Our opening event is a handicap for Apprentice jockey's. With just the five runners on show looks a great chance for NORTONTHORPE BOY [4th 16/5] to continue his winning run despite the rise in weights for recent Lingfield successes, with ELUSIVE TREAT [WON 7/2] the most likely danger to follow him home here. To be honest a case could be made for any of these tonight and probably not an event to get too heavily involved.

17:15  Unibet Extra Place Offers Every Day Handicap
6f  [Class 5  12 runners]
The 7yo mare TURANGA LEELA [2nd 12/1] looks sure to run her race having been successful three times in recent months, including a course and distance win here. Usually races up with the pace and ought to be competitive once more of this handicap rating. While MISS THOUGHTFUL [9th 40/1] is another CD winner here last January and only 1lb higher than that mark expecting her to be close once more, chased home Turanga Leela in January and riders 5lb claim could be useful.

17:45  Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Handicap (3yo)
1m  [Class 4  7 runners]
Richard Hannon's 3yo BABAJAN [4th 5/1] is on a hat trick and only a 1lb higher than latest win at Newcastle, although that was a small field he did the job well so good to stick with while in current mood together with stablemate CUBAN CIGAR [2nd 5/1] who gets weight from all and also has Thore Hammer Hansen's 3lb claim, wasn't far away at Lingfield last time and could go one better here tonight.

18:15  Unibet New Instant Roulette Handicap
1m  [Class 4  11 runners]
Stuart Williams' 7yo GLENN COCO [7th 9/1] returns to Kempton having tumbled down the weights since his last appearance here and also has a 3lb claiming jockey to help. RED JASPER [10th 18/1] had a couple of place efforts here and gets weight from the field should run well at a decent price for trainer Michael Appleby.

19:15  Try Our New Price Boosts At Unibet Handicap
1m 2f 219y  [Class 4  14 runners]
Winner of his last two runs HINT OF STARS [WON 7/4] is high on the list to complete the hat trick tonight after a short break, with 7lb claimer retaining the ride once again. While PARTY ISLAND [5th 15/2] is also seeking a hat trick of wins the latest coming here over this trip for George Bass it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in the match betting.

19:45  Try Our New Super Boosts At Unibet Handicap (Div One)
7f  [Class 5  11 runners]
The final handicap has been split into two divisions, where the 4yo filly TRIXIE WATERBURY [7th 3/1] won here last time, with a big gap back to the field having run on strongly to beat Aces and Kings under Luke Morris who is booked for the ride once again. BROUGHTON SUNPEARL [6th 13/2] has run her last six races here at Kempton, winning in December, Laura Pearson claims a useful 5lb and I do expect the top two to dominate the outcome.

20:15  Try Our New Super Boosts At Unibet Handicap (Div Two)
7f  [Class 5  10 runners]
Our finale tonight, the second division of the 7f handicap, BORN TO FINISH [6th 10/3] a winner of his last two events including here, the 8yo continues to thrive in these lower grade events and could well pick up another win tonight. Beat Trixie Waterbury last time out at Lingfield so will be interested to see if she can win in the previous race. IN THE RED [3rd 10/1] is another 8yo who can be a bit in and out but has run well here in the past, back to a winning mark though and wouldn't be the biggest shock to see a good run once more.

Staked -- 14 points.       Returns -- 7.25 points.
Results will appear here later during Wednesday evening. All results are accurate and recorded to SP returns to a 1pt win stake only and updated each meeting
A winning start to 2021 has been very welcome, and although last week we only found one winner for a small loss our overall profit figure is still good up +44.74 pts after meeting #5. We will update tonight's meeting #6 during the course of the evening, well could have been better, a couple of winners and several nice places, but to a level stake at SP we lost -6.75 points tonight and that means our running profit is now +37.99 pts.

Lays -- 8/11 We had a good season last year again with the lays, aiming at favourites and not afraid to take on short odds on shots too. The plan will be for at least one or two each meeting and we will keep those results separate from the handicaps, three correct last week, hopefully continue that tonight.

Tonight's Lays;
None for this week, too many handicaps.
Kempton Park Racecourse

Our next midweek floodlit meeting here will be held on Wednesday 3rd March so keep well and hopefully we can have a successful 2021.

PARK RUN 5K -- LOCKDOWN FEATURE #5 - WEEK FIVE

Park Walk 5k

Continuing with the simple eight week guide to successfully completing a 5k walk. You can walk at the same pace throughout or, if you want, you can alter the pace that you walk as indicated below. Remember that any plan is only a guide, so please do go at your own comfortable pace. Go on you can keep it going we heading into the home stretch now...

WEEK FIVE

  • 15 minutes of walking every other day.
(this doesn’t have to be done in one go)

  • Also try for a 30 minute or approx 2.5k continuous walk once a week.
(maybe alternating 5 minutes of faster paced walking and 2 minute steady)

We've reached week 5 of our really simple and easy walking plan πŸ‘£

How are you getting on?

The cold doesn't help I know but trying to keep moving and warm up, wrap up well, then try to vary the route if you can.

Park Walk 5k

Refuelling is important too and Park Run have a partnership with Co-op, get yourself down there for important supplies and why no whip up a quick ham, mushroom and Worcestershire sauce omelette. Yum, always my go to food to use up any 'left overs' in the fridge too, eggs are a great stand by as I maintain that ALL dishes are improved by the addition of a poached egg on top.

KEMPTON PARK HORSE RACING 2021 - MEETING #5 WEDNESDAY 17th FEBRUARY

Kempton Park Evening Fixture 2021Welcome to Kempton Park racecourse here for another season of evening meetings following the events on a Wednesday night on the all weather flat track under the lights. We will be blogging throughout 2021 till the end of the year. Another successful evening last time out, and still well ahead as February brings another cold spell. Plenty of other sporting action to enjoy, AFC Wimbledon finally managed a win last week at Wigan but had their game against Rochdale on Saturday called off due to a frozen pitch. More six nations action over the weekend too with England needing a good display against Italy following their defeat to Scotland (Won 41-18). Continue to enjoy my horse racing exploits here and over the jumps with Cheltenham NH festival coming up next month.

Back to the horse racing tonight where all results here are reported to 1pt at Starting Prices (SP) we will be keeping a rolling record of profit/loss all the way through from January till the Boxing Day King George fixture in December. After our first month of meetings we have a +48.24 profit and will continue to keep a results record to SP throughout 2021.
Currently standing at 5/8 after the latest meeting and we shall see how things progress during the year ahead.

This week we look forward to the fifth Wednesday evening meeting of the year and sadly it's still being held behind closed doors as we continue in the latest national lockdown. Tonight we shall be expecting a nine race card with five handicaps to review. The action on tonight's card will now commence at 16:15 with a seven furlong maiden event and we should end the card around about 20:20 with the second division of the classified stakes event over six furlongs. There are no noted feature races tonight, the best being a class two handicap while the rest are class five / class six handicaps.

Here's a link to this Wednesday's race card; RACECARD
Going and Weather -- The going on the polytrack surface is described as 'standard to slow' and the current weather forecast for this Wednesday is for a lot of chilly weather and it's probably just as well there is no attendance tonight as there's likely to be plenty of rain plus the temperature will only reach a high of 11C tonight.

Here are our handicap selections for tonight;
17:15  Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Handicap
6f  [Class 2  /  8 runners]
Our opening handicap follows two maiden events on the card and is the best quality event in terms of 'class' and prize money. BRIAN THE SNAIL [4th @5/1] has gone well for us before, winning three of his last six runs at different all weather tracks shows he's very versatile (also placed in some big handicaps such as Stewards Cup at Goodwood) and the run might well continue tonight. While this is another step along the ladder for GHAITH [2nd @6/1] has a recent win to his name and could be a little bit of value against the opposition in a fairly open race.

17:45  Unibet Casino Deposit 10 Get 40 Bonus Fillies' Handicap
1m 3f 219y  [Class 5  /  9 runners]
It's the fillies turn now, a field of nine, the two 'top weights' Inclyne and Dono Di Dio are helped by the presence of two claiming jockey's but are still overlooked as our selection in favour of PRISMATIC [5th @18/1] a filly by Golden Horn has only had four races so far and should be at home over this trip. Also looking towards LUNAR BOUNTY [2nd @11/1] the Alan King filly will have a future over obstacles for sure and yet could be one to keep on side in flat handicaps - beaten a neck.

18:20  Try Our New Super Boosts At Unibet Handicap
1m  [Class 4  /  7 runners]
A mile handicap to enjoy now, where SILVER DUST [2nd @10/1] returns to the course for the first time since winning here last March, also successful at Beverley and Hamilton has dropped back to a reasonable handicap mark now and should give us a good run for our money and for his trainer Richard Fahey. Interesting to see THAAYER [6th @11/1] come down to Kempton as is usually seen on the Newcastle Aw surface, tumbled down from a mark of 81 if the travelling isn't an issue this might be a big price result.

18:50  Try Our New Price Boosts At Unibet Fillies' Handicap
1m  [Class 5  /  8 runners]
The fillies race over a mile now where the 7yo mare THE JEAN GENIE [6th 14/1] returns to a workable mark and although seems to have a preference to running at Lingfield (her last five runs there, placed twice) if the change of scenery doesn't upset her I would expect a big run in this class. While LADY ALAVESA [5th 9/2] was a winner in a small field here when last seen, only 2lb higher tonight and does represent the only course and distance form in the field. Jockey Jack Mitchell keeps the ride and another win looks on the cards.

19:20  Join Racing TV Now Handicap
1m  [Class 6  /  9 runners]
Our final handicap event tonight has the largest field of ten, top weight ROLLER [WON @11/2] actually runs of 9-4 with Joanna Mason's 5lb claim, she was on board when runner up here last time out and the 8yo should go close once more in this company. one of several course and distance winners in the field tonight. My other selection is a relatively young mare with low millage RAHA [5th @9/1] a 5yo who's recent runs here have been at a slightly higher grade, with the jockey's 3lb claim I would be surprised if not placed at least.

Staked -- 10 points.       Returns -- 6.5 points.
Results will appear here later during Wednesday evening. All results are accurate and recorded to SP returns to a 1pt win stake only and updated each meeting
A winning start to 2021 was most welcome, and we had another successful meeting here last time which increased our overall profit up to +48.24 pts after meeting #4. We will update tonight's results for meeting #5 during the course of the evening. Was looking like a few runners up but we managed a win in the last to minimize the loss tonight, down -3.5 pts but still +44.74 pts to carry onwards to meeting #6

Lays -- 5/8 We had a good season last year again with the lays, aiming at favourites and not afraid to take on short odds on shots too. The plan will be for at least one or two each meeting and we will keep those results separate from the handicaps. All three lays are beat tonight which is always pleasing especially when one is odds-on [overall 8/11]

Tonight's Lays;
16:15 - Regent [7f Maiden].  Lost 3rd 7/2
16:45 - Raging Rascal [7f Maiden].  Lost 3rd 8/11f
17:15 - Premier Power [6f Handicap].  Lost 8th 9/4f
Kempton Park Racecourse

Our next midweek floodlit meeting here will be held on Wednesday 24th February so keep well and hopefully we can have a successful 2021.

MARK ROBINSON APPOINTED AS NEW AFC WIMBLEDON MANAGER

AFC Wimbledon have finally confirmed the news that Mark Robinson has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the first team following the departure last month of Glyn Hodges and Nick Daws.

Mark Robinson AFC new head coach
Mark first joined the club as a coach back in 2004, and has been the Interim Manager since January 30 and will need no introduction to Wimbledon fans, having been with the club since 2004. He holds a UEFA 'A' coaching licence, and has served the club as Head of Youth, Centre of Excellence Manager, Academy Manager, Lead Professional Phase Coach and Loan Manager, First Team Coach and, most recently, Interim Manager of the first team.

During his extensive time with the club Mark has played a huge part in helping the likes of Will Nightingale, Anthony Hartigan, Paul Osew, Jack Rudoni and Paul Kalambayi progress to our first-team squad.

Commenting on the appointment, AFC Wimbledon CEO, Joe Palmer said: “It’s fair to say that, in his short time as Interim Manager, Mark has made a hugely positive impression on the players and staff. This impact, coupled with his determination and ability to bring about cultural change, gave Mark the edge over the other candidates and we are delighted to give him this chance to show us where he can take us.”

Mark said: “Everyone knows how I feel about AFC Wimbledon and I am absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity at the club that is the greatest story in football; a club with a great heritage and the best supporters in the country.

“There is undoubtedly a lot of hard work to be done but when you look at the quality in the squad and the academy, alongside the good people we have in place in and around the club, if we can all pull together it makes me genuinely excited about what we can achieve.”

Everyone involved with AFC Wimbledon wishes Mark all the best in his new role.

PARK RUN 5K -- LOCKDOWN FEATURE #4 - WEEK FOUR; Half Way There

Park Walk 5k

You can walk at the same pace throughout or, if you want, you can alter the pace that you walk as indicated below. Remember that any plan is only a guide, so please do go at your own pace and do as much or as little as you can or want, celebrating your progress along the way.

Week four

  • 15 minutes of walking every other day at a steady pace (this doesn’t have to be done in one go)

  • If you can, add in a 15 minute or approx 1.5k / 1 mile continuous walk (alternating 3 minutes of faster pace walking and 2 minutes easy) once a week.

Despite the snow and rain, been good to keep getting out there for a good walk, takes about fifteen to twenty minutes to walk into town for either shopping, lunch or as I did last week the first of my two Covid-19 vaccine jabs. Bit sore in the arm after that but otherwise no side effects showing.

Well done - You’re half way there!

AFC WIMBLEDON v ROCHDALE -- 20/21 LEAGUE ONE - PLOUGH LANE 13th FEBRUARY 2021 - GAME OFF

AFC Wimbledon vs Rochdale League One

Saturday 13th February 2021 3:00pm

*UPDATE* - AFC Wimbledon's home match versus Rochdale has been postponed due to a frozen pitch at Plough Lane. Despite covers being put down to protect the pitch, the playing surface was deemed unplayable after a morning pitch inspection.

AFC Wimbledon will 'host' their next home game back in Wimbledon against Rochdale at the New Plough Lane Stadium. Still no prospect of any fans being allowed in to watch during the latest Government national lockdown. On the plus side though many people (including myself) have received at least one dose of the various covid-19 vaccines via the NHS. Maybe this is our route back to some sort of 'normality'. Buoyed by the 3-2 win last weekend against Wigan the Dons had a free week to train, recover and plan our next home game, while Rochdale had a midweek home game against Milton Keynes where they lost 1-4. A win for the Dons would leapfrog Rochdale and with a gap beginning to appear above them we don't really want to risk falling further down. Wimbledon still led by interim manager Mark Robinson also recently signed former Spurs youth team product Shayon Harrison who was last seen playing in the Dutch second division with Almere, we still rely heavily on Joe Pigott in attack with his fifteen goals this season.
League One Season 20/21
Onto today's game itself this Saturday in League One and our opponents today, Rochdale are like us down at the wrong end of the table. A key win against them would be appreciated, and if so would also make a change to conquer two sides at the bottom end since have a habit of being rolling over. Rochdale are led by Irishman Brian Barry-Murphy an ex player for some seasons was previously on the books with Bury FC as a defensive midfielder. Rochdale currently occupy 18th place in the League One table after their 1-4 loss midweek, with 26 points they are one point and one place above the Dons going into this encounter

His side have now won just once at home in 18 matches in all competitions this term. Rochdale's win against Bristol Rovers on 30th January was their only success in their past 10 games yet they remain outside of the drop zone. Reliant on forward Mathew Lund for the bulk of their goals, if we can keep him quiet maybe we in for a change of fortunes.

Most Recent League Games
Wigan Athletic 2 - 3 AFC Wimbledon
Rochdale 1 - 4 Franchise FC

Head to Head
Our head to head form against Rochdale is quite positive, having met on twelve occasions before today's match we have won six, drawn four and lost only twice. Those two losses came in our early years back in the football league, so we are unbeaten against them since 2014. Another win tonight would be useful in our quest to stay in League One.

Match Summary;

My Man of the Match - TBA.

Attendance - None for now, maybe once we exit another lockdown and out of Tier 4 maybe sometime in 2021.

Today's Referee - Today's match officials for this weekend will be Mr Benjamin Speedie from Merseyside. A recent addition to the football league list he did take charge of our 2-4 defeat to Bristol Rovers back in December and averages about three bookings a game, the average not helped by the TEN cards he dished out in the FA Cup game between Morecambe and Solihull Moors. Will have the assistance of Daniel Cook and Stephen Finch on the touchlines while the fourth official duties are being handled by Garry Maskell
.
