ASCOT SEPTEMBER WEEKEND MEETING - FRIDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 2020

Ascot Racecourse Friday 4th September
This weekend we have a two day meeting from one of my favourite local tracks, Ascot stages it's September meeting, and despite the lack of attendees for the time being it should still be a quality meeting and should have competitive contests.
Why raceday restrictions must stay, for now – Dr Jerry Hill
In a blog published on the BHA website, the BHA’s Chief Medical Adviser, Dr Jerry Hill, explains the importance of following British racing’s protocols for behind closed doors racing, which are in place to keep everyone safe on the racecourse. He emphasises that the infection control measures are just as necessary as they were when racing resumed in June, and addresses the question of why, when other sectors of the economy have seen restrictions loosened, racing isn’t yet able to go further in easing controls.

We will keep an eye on Friday and Saturday, starting today with an eight race card to enjoy this afternoon. The meeting on Saturday which should also be on ITV Racing too will be updated soon with our selection for each race below;

Going: Good to Soft [Good in places]
Today's Ascot race-card can be found here

13:55 The St John Ambulance Volunteers (Berkshire) British EBF Novice Auction Stakes (Div One)
6f  [Class 4  10 runners]
We open with two divisions of a 2yo auction stakes the opening one has an obvious favourite with the only winner here DANDYS DERRIERE his win coming on the all weather at Wolverhampton though sandwiched between two good runner up efforts at Newbury and Sandown. Is unlikely to be far away but conceding 6lb to a Richard Hannon 2yo is a big ask so we include PURE DREAMER too in the opening contest.
Winner - (2) Dark Shift @10/1 [K Shoemark].

14:30 The St John Ambulance Volunteers (Berkshire) British EBF Novice Auction Stakes (Div Two)
6f  [Class 4  9 runners]
The second division is open, while Lockdown has had some chances and might need a nursery soon, we will go with a pair are decent odds against the field. FANGORN a newcomer from Mick Channon and STIGWOOD who is having his third run but improved from debut to finish fourth in similar race on firm going.
Winner - (7) Prince of Abington @13/2 [Jim Crowley].

15:05 The Garrard Future Stayers' Maiden Stakes

7f  [Class 3  15 runners]
A fifteen runner maiden for 2yo's with the majority of them newcomers so for me would be a race to watch. Greatgadian represents King Power Racing who often run well here, and Mutaraafeq is running in the colours of Hamden Al Maktoum should be thereabouts.
Winner - (7) La Barrosa @2/1f [James Doyle].

15:40 Victoria Racing Club Handicap
1m 3f 211y  [Class 2  9 runners]
A fairly small field of only nine for a class two handicap, LOOK CLOSELY having won his last two races here should still be followed while in a great order and still have improvement in him, trainer Roger Varian also runs Emirates Knight. While support for DASH OF SPICE could be interesting, previously a Royal Ascot winner has returned in some of the top handicaps and though midfield in the Ebor on latest run this looks a much easier race on better ground and this 25/1 shot is an each way chance.
Winner - (1) Laafy @9/2 [Jim Crowley]

16:15 The Harrogate Water Classified Stakes
1m  [Class 3  10 runners]
One mile on the straight course and the field is headed by BRAINS (Jamie Osborne) while a no show in the Royal Hunt Cup here has at least found winning easier on the all weather tracks in the past year but isn't completely out of the question on turf and with a rating of 93 one of the more likely winners. Hayley Turner runs superbly here too and is on board TULFARRIS a close second on last two runs (both here) so is a natural choice to make it one better. The filly QUEEN GAMRAH (Mark Johnston) gets the weight allowance and 20/1 chance for an each way selection.
Winner - (6) Plantadream @13/2 [J Spencer]

16:50 The Beefeater Handicap Stakes
1m  [Class 2  9 runners]
Our next event also on the straight course and another class two event headed by Mark Johnston's BLOWN BY WIND is consistent around this mark of 104, could be vulnerable to one or two in the field but is considered for the master trainer. AFAAK has run well here before now including a win at the Royal Meeting in the Hunt Cup, has been given a few pounds back from the handicapper, should appreciate the ease in the going too. TEMPUS is the likely market leader for Roger Charlton and Khalid Abdullah, only had five runs so far in his career but winner of three of these and may well progress to a level higher than handicaps of this nature in future.
Winner - (6) Tempus @13/8f [Jason Watson]

17:20 The Bateaux London Handicap Stakes
6f  [Class 4  20 runners]
Largest field on the card for this handicap, looks very open so will side with two against the field MINHAAJ, ran on late to win on the line at Sandown and could get a good run here too, while the apprentice ridden MOKAATIL has run well in defeat on last few runs and the 7lb taken off could be decisive here and should be involved at the end again.
Winner - (20) My Style @20/1 [Georgia Dobie]

17:55 The Hallgarten Handicap Stakes (3yo)
7f  [Class 4  11 runners]
The finale is another handicap event over seven furlongs, headed by SUNSET BREEZE (Sir Mark Prescott) who was found opportunities to win three earlier in the year but last run was in better class and on soft ground so there is still a good chance in this company to win again. Lightly raced filly Double or Bubble was winning at Sandown and upped in class now so could be vulnerable. MAYSONG has only raced once this year, was slowly away and probably better than his final position so is given another chance to shine here and 20/1 could be a nice win/place option.
Winner - (3) Double of Bubble @9/2f [James Doyle]

Racing behind closed doors at Ascot
Results will be update here later on during the afternoon, have a great weekend, we'll be back here online with Saturday's meeting hope you can join us then. Keep well.
