AFC WIMBLEDON v NORTHAMPTON TOWN -- 20/21 LEAGUE ONE SEASON OPENER

League One Season 20/21
12th September 2020
AFC Wimbledon will open the campaign for the 2020-21 League One season away at Northampton Town, who were promoted back to the third tier having won the League Two play off final beating Exeter City 4-0 at an empty Wembley Stadium. Both teams have gone through a summer rebuilding process, for AFC Wimbledon this is happening both on and off the field of course with the continued development of the Plough Lane home which hopefully can be used later in the year. Good to see more pictures with more and more rows of seats appearing, each day there seems to be change and it's more and more looking like our stadium. And when us fans can get in there it's going to feel like our home too. #COYD

Plough Lane Stadium nearing completion
Our opponents Northampton Town are managed by ex Wimbledon player Keith Curle, who managed the 'Cobblers' through to success in the play offs last season. I'm sure Keith will get a great welcome if we can have fans in time for the home fixture at the Plough Lane stadium, but for today we hope to inflict an opening day defeat on his side. As you can see from the picture above the new stadium is really coming along now for it's initial phase one more roof to go on and more seats beginning to be put in place too.

Saturday 5th September
EFL Carabao Cup 1st Round

Northampton Town 3 - 0 Cardiff City
Oxford United 1 - 1 AFC Wimbledon
(Oxford won 4-3 on penalties)

Last Saturday saw the start of the Carabao League Cup and both teams were in action and Northampton ran out comfortable winners against Cardiff City while the Dons blew their chances of progress by missing an 83rd penalty against Oxford and lost in the shootout. Am expecting Northampton to be favourites for this game as the home side, but I think the Dons can mount a spirited effort and not be too far off the pace. Need to take the chances when they are offered though. Might see some more new faces, Ollie Palmer has hopefully recovered to something near full fitness and might see some action with Joe Pigott leading the line still for the Dons. Latest signed announced is Daniel Csoka who arrives on a permanent deal from Premier League Wolves and this Hungarian is very versatile which should help and hopefully will quickly settle in and prove to be a success.

First Half Comments;
Teams confirmed, we are ready for a 3pm start in Northampton, the Dons kick off and what a start for us, only 20 seconds and it's 0-1 Ethan Chislett with the Dons opening goal of the campaign, 89 mins to hold on now. Not surprised that Northampton equalised when Matthew Warburton scored from a free kick with a right footed shot but that was short lived as Nesta Guinness-Walker put us back in the lead with a left footed shot, there should be more goals to come. Didn't have to wait too long for the fourth goal either, what a ding dong game we have in the first half, Northampton's second equaliser from Ricky Korboa not too long after the Dons had a chance to make it three but hit the crossbar. Some game this.

⚽
Full Time Score 2 - 2.

Match Summary;
A subdued second half with no further goals and a 2-2 draw a decent result away from home against one of the better organised teams. Could have won it late on too if Terell Thomas had steered his header under the bar rather than over. Team creates chances and based on this and the other two cup games we look better than the tame side last year who could create chances till they were behind. Optimistic for the season, but best to review after another half a dozen games played and see if we have one point or a few more!

My Man of the Match - Joe Pigott.

Attendance - None for now ;(

Today's Referee - Today's match referee will be Mr Ollie Yates from Staffordshire, not shy of showing a card or three so hopefully he'll be keen to keep that going today (red card for them would be nice) will be ably assisted by Paul Kelly and Scott Williams. The fourth official will be Marc Wilson.

Dons next league match:
19/09/2020 vs Plymouth Argyle (Home)
League One Kick off 3:00pm
