HAPPY 49th BIRTHDAY ME -- 30th APRIL 1969 - 2018

And here is to another year I've survived, one more to go till the big 50 but I remain very much in denial about that for now. Alive and kicking (just) but in a better place than I was some twelve months ago which is a big relief to me and I hope to make my road towards fifty full of fun and adventure.

I make a point of never working my birthday and once again have the week booked off to enjoy, so what to do with that time? Well today (Monday 30th) will pay a visit to the crematorium and see Mum and Dad. Have a nice lunch somewhere but will probably be alone, that's fine I've other things to do this week and will hopefully meet up with few friends and family. Later this week we have planned some days out which begin with an annual excursion to Ascot races on Wednesday will be joined by my big brother and few others. It's an annual event going racing for this meeting in particular we've been doing it for the last 15 years or so, usually a nice day out, plenty to see and do, met some lovely ladies last time out and if I am in a better state of health I will play things a lot differently if that repeats itself *ahem*. We will also cover the racing side of things over on a separate post in this blog as well as the Pontefract meeting which will also be on the Wednesday afternoon.

Making plans for the rest of the week and on the agenda will be a short break to the seaside, usually go down to Brighton for a day out but as my friend Sarah moved to Bognor Regis last year and I've yet to see her so have booked myself a trip down there instead for a break. Going on the train Thursday lunchtime, returning at the weekend. Have found a hotel on the sea front within walking distance of the train station and beach, and all being well meeting up with my lovely friend on the Friday. Money has been a problem most of this year but as we have the week off to enjoy ourselves we will ensure we find somewhere to go out while I am down there on the south coast.

As usual am not expecting any birthday cards, gifts or surprises, it will just be another day in amongst a fun week off to enjoy, relax and try hard not to keep thinking about all the mistakes I am still making, that will have to wait for another day. Used to get a little something for myself on my birthday though right now I neither can afford one nor deserve one, so if I do something it will be small. Have still been collecting some N Gauge items and will need a small board to set up a test track on perhaps? Will probably browse eBay and see if there is anything I can get as a gift for me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME
BEST WISHES FROM ALL THE LADS ON THE ARK ROYAL!!

PONTEFRACT HORSE RACING SYSTEM -- 2018 TURF SEASON -- PART TWO

PONTEFRACT SEASON 2018.

Monday 23rd April.
Welcome to our opening meeting of this season.

Yes of course this is the 2nd meeting in the calendar but with the opening one being abandoned this will be our opening fixture for 2018 here for another season in West Yorkshire at Pontefract Races. There are usually 16 fixtures across the season on the turf this meeting also includes the first leg in the 2018 Stayers Championship which was won last season by TUSCAN GOLD. We will look forward to getting underway on Monday where the first race will be off about 2.10pm.

As always we count ALL results for this meeting returned to a level stake at SP, and will also show any forecast results too in the daily results but these do not count for the profit / loss figures.

The forecast going for Monday is currently reported as 'Good to Soft - Soft in places' the weather for Monday afternoon is for a partly cloudy day with some showers due and a forecast maximum temperature around the 13-14C mark, Could be better I guess for April, it'll surely improve throughout the spring and summer months.

Here are our selections for the 8 races on Monday afternoon, remember it's a very simple selection process of stalls 1 and 2 in every race;

(2) -- JO'S GIRL  [WON 8/1].

Staked -- 16 points.

Returns -- 15 Points

Last season might have been a bit of a blowout compared to recent years, but we start the season with another clean slate, and results from today will be updated later on at the end of the meeting. No score so far at the half way stage, tons of places though so ever hopeful, then picked up a pair of winners in the second half of the meeting and that cut our losses to a single point to SP.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 2nd MayKeep following us throughout the season.

EMIRATES FA CUP SEMI FINAL WEEKEND 2018

This seasons FA Cup competition reaches the last four, and both ties over this weekend will of course be played at Wembley Stadium. Saturday's tie between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will be broadcast LIVE on BBC One.

SATURDAY 21st APRIL     KO - 5:15PM
MANCHESTER UNITED 2  vs  1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Would have made a decent final, Jose is a trophy collector and while the main prizes have eluded him this season there's no doubt he will be annoyed if he doesn't have another chance to add to his personal haul. Mauricio Pochettino however should be desperate to finally secure a first trophy and a long overdue one for Spurs. Much depends on the fitness and form of key strikers, Harry Kane had a recent spell out but is back and scoring, and in Alli, Erikson and Son they have back up a plenty. United have Lukaku who scored in the midweek win over Bournemouth and will be interesting to see if Lingard, Rashford will start or not.

I'll go with a tight 2-1 win for Manchester United.
-- Nice win this evening, can't believe that United were 11/5 to win the tie, and got 9/1 for the scoreline. Happy, and Tottenham continue with that long long long wait for a trophy.

SUNDAY 22nd APRIL       KO - 3PM
CHELSEA 2  vs  0  SOUTHAMPTON
The Sunday afternoon game is a repeat of last weekends premier league game which Chelsea won 3-2 after being two down for a lot of the game. Southampton are in danger of losing their Premier league status this season and even under new manager Mark Hughes it would be a surprise to see last season's League Cup finalists making it to another Cup Final.

However Wigan managed just that feat and were still relegated after they beat Manchester City not that long ago so anything is possible.

Chelsea have the better squad and although talk is of the blues manger Antonio Conte leaving in the summer why wouldn't he want to go out with another trophy on his CV.

Chelsea to win 3-1 for me [12/1].
Backing the Penalty awarded market too [7/2].

2018 KEMPTON PARK RACES -- WEDNESDAY NIGHTS #8 18th APRIL

First quarter of the year gone already, and plenty to enjoy already, with Cheltenham over and the Grand National winner crowned for another year. However this blog primarily follows the progress of handicap races on the Wednesday night races here at Kempton Park racecourse in Surrey. We've started the year a bit behind now although it's a bit up and down this is only meeting eight.  There are usually 4-5 handicap races covered and some Lay bets too with separate totals recorded to SP throughout the year.

We are now into April and ready for week number eight, though we began the year with a loss we clawed most of that back in week four and then had a wipe-out in the last couple of meetings so find ourselves down -24 points to SP, early days and there is a long way to go but if we had recorded results to the prices taken we'd be in a much better situation, alas we record to starting prices.

As we continue to focus on the handicap contests for each Wednesday evening meeting we will also occasionally include a feature listed or conditions event too if one is available. Keeping records of our endeavours to a 1 point level stake at SP, naturally we will personally be looking to get better odds than this but for the purpose of these results here we simply record SP returns only.

We will keep up with our occasional lay opportunities of short priced favourites too which wasn't too bad last year with 18 from 28 (64%) short price lays throughout the season. Naturally we will keep these results separately from the handicap figures, off to a disappointing start this season though and as the favs are winning we are currently 3/7 going forwards with these for 2018.

This Wednesday is meeting number eight for the 2018 season and we are expecting an eight race card tonight with five handicaps to enjoy the action will commence
at 17:45 with a novice stakes event over five furlongs.

Here's a link to this Wednesday's race card; RACECARD

The going on the polytrack surface is described as 'standard to slow' and the current weather forecast for this Wednesday is for a warmer day so have a good night without the threat of rain for a change so the top temperature will be about 21C by the time the meeting gets underway.

Here are our selections for tonight;

18:15 -- 7f Handicap (3yo).
A field of 14 for our first handicap of the evening and will start with BOND STREET BEAU [5th 12/1] who has just started his handicap campaign with Josephine Gordon in the saddle a plus.

CRYSTAL CASQUE [4th 6/1] ran three times around this course as a 2yo and that experience should be useful in this competition.

18:45 -- 1m 2f 219y Handicap.
Both 4yo's INTERMODAL [5th 5/1] and FAMOUS DYNASTY [6th 6/1] have some course winning form to speak off and that is useful up against the likely short favourite here DELEYLL who will represent one of our lays tonight (Lost 11th 20/1 was forecast 2/1F in the overnight show??).

20:15 -- 7f Handicap.
Plenty of interest in the Luca Cumani trained WARSAW ROAD [4th 9/2] who has won three of his last four and is only 4lb higher than his last win could still be improving.

Paddy Bradley takes a useful 5lb off SAYESSE [9th 10/1] and this recent Wolverhampton runner up is also of interest at 12/1.

20:45 -- 1m 7f 218y Handicap.

Top weight GAVLAR [4th 7/1] is a consistent type and has won at marks of up to 90 and so on 83 can have a chance, a recent 3rd around here suggests that his chance isn't too far away.

UBER COOL [6th 7/1] has won three of his six starts and although lacking in all weather form and is only 2lb higher than his latest win.

21:15 -- 7f Handicap.
Top weight UBLA [Non Runner] was runner up around here on Friday and if turned out this quickly must be fancied ready and fit to strike. HARAZ [Non Runner] has been a model of consistency and while doesn't win that often is given a chance in this company, has even been placed on the actual sand on Laytown Beach and it's those two against the field.

Staked -- 10 points.
Returns -- 2 points.

Results will appear here later on Wednesday night
. We seek to recover from our current deficit of -24 points. Getting annoying now losing another 9 points tonight. Down
-32 points.

LAYS -- 3/7 if we have one or two Lays tonight they will be updated here also. Got 2 from the 3 tonight, our stats now show 5 from 10 going forward.

Tonight's Lays;

JUNGLE INTHEBUNGLE  (17:45)  LOST 2nd 6/5F
DELEYLL  (18:45)  LOST 11th 20/1
IL PRIMO SOLE  (19:15)  WON 5/2.
Kempton Park Races Wednesday nights

Our ninth meeting here at Kempton Park will be next month on 23rd May so see you then.

2018 AINTREE GRAND NATIONAL WINNER

And the winner is ...

TIGER ROLL

2018 GRAND NATIONAL WINNER

Congratulations to all involved with this years winner, who was ridden by Davy Russell and a second winner for trainer Gordon Elliott after Silver Birch. Was well clear over the last but had to hold the late surge of runner up PLEASANT COMPANY who also ran an excellent race.
Now a winner at both the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals it will be hard to beat that, so enjoy the year as champion and we'll look forward to doing it all again in 2019.

Also a big well done to Bryony Frost who got round and finished in 5th with her horse MILANSBAR and many bookies paid out for 5th place too which was nice.  Pleased to add that ALL 38 runners that set off came back safe and sound too, even with the distressing fall of SAINT ARE who was getting treatment but returned to the stables later.

AINTREE GRAND NATIONAL DAY -- SATURDAY 14th APRIL 2018

This coming weekend it's The Grand National at Aintree, once again it is sponsored by Randox Health, the biggest and most watched steeplechase contest there is. If you going then good luck and hope you enjoy a wonderful time in Liverpool.

Aintree's Grand National is the most popular jumps race on the calendar as 40 runners take on the daunting obstacle of 30 fences over the course of four and a quarter miles. Like the millions of others I will not be going and instead catching it on ITV. The TV channels recently changed the timing of the race so it's near the end of the card, I can only assume this is to try and gain a bigger TV audience though there are plenty of other events on this weekend.

The forecast going is now described as "SOFT, GOOD TO SOFT in places" and this 4m 2f+ trip will surely be run at a fast pace.

Last years winner ONE FOR ARTHUR (above) is an absentee having not seen a racecourse again since his epic victory twelve months ago, still in training though so we might see him again. This years race is headed by BLACKLION now and he's already popular in the betting and a winner over these fences too.

There's a feast of good jumping before we get to the main event towards the end of the card, we will have a brief look through these when the final declarations are out and give some selections for the accompanying races.

13.45 Gaskells Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) 3m ½f

Our opener on National day is a 3m+ handicap hurdle, we've a huge field of 22 declared overnight and this will be run at a decent pace. I had a punt on the David Pipe trained MR BIG SHOT [WON 7/1] at Cheltenham and though he ran well for a long way found the finish too much and that might have put him spot on for today on an easier track.

At a bigger price also interested in FORTUNATE GEORGE [20th 33/1] to get us up and running on National day.

Found a nice 7/1 winner to kick us off with, hopefully the rest of the meeting will be as kind to us

14.25 Betway Mersey Novices' Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m 4f

A field of 14 for the G1 Novice hurdle and we've a strong fav in ON THE BLIND SIDE who will doing well to keep his unbeaten run going now. I will side with the pair of WESTERN RYDER [5th 13/2] and MOMELLA [3rd 10/1] against the field at 10/1 each and the latter should be backed in the place markets too with the Skelton team still in good form and wasn't far off the fav earlier in the year so very high in my shortlist

15.00 The Doom Bar Maghull Novices' Steeple Chase (Grade 1) 2m
A poor turn out here with only six runners, and an odds on favourite in PETIT MOUCHOIR [LOST 4/5F]. Doesn't appeal as a betting contest but would rather lay the fav and look at SHANTOU ROCK [3rd 13/2] who could get an easy lead and will take that one in the win and place markets too.

15.40 The Betway Handicap Chase (Listed) 3m 1fA big field now with 17 declared for this chase, sure a race where the jockeys will be praying for a clear round so not to compromise their rides in the big race later.

Will want to rule out all those that have either a 'PFU' in their last run or two here, and that will help narrow it down a bit. Plenty of interest in THOMAS PATRICK [WON 3/1] who is rapidly improving as a stayer and although 8lb higher than last win could still be ahead of the handicapper.

At a larger price i would take interest in HEIST [7th 33/1] at 33/1 he's a multiple winner over fences and back to a winning mark now so could be good time to catch him and is a game battler although this is obviously more difficult hence the price.

16.20
The Ryanair Stayers' Liverpool Hurdle (Grade 1) 3m ½f
Time for the stayers hurdle and we see SAM SPINNER take his chance for redemption having failed at the Cheltenham Festival. At the likely short price it's one to avoid for me and although a month off might have helped I'd rather be on one of the bigger odds options than risk him again.

Both LIL ROCKERFELLER [Pulled up 12/1] and OLD GUARD [7th 12/1] are tough but will be tested here although at 20/1 that looks worth a punt should get a good gallop too.

17.15 Randox Health Grand National Steeple Chase (Grade 3) 4m 2½f

And now for the BIG ONE, 40 runners declared for a 4m 2f+ marathon over two circuits of this unique course and 30 fences to be jumped in all.

So much required here, staying power, jumping and all the luck needed to avoid the falls, debris and loose horses too. Look to one with proven ability around this unique course and fences and that's BLACKLION [12/1] who has won the Beecher Chase in the past and was 4th here last year. A year older and in excellent hands could improve a bit as an 9yo, worth a shout. FELL 1st !

Appears I've picked out TOTAL RECALL in the office sweepstake and is probably the pick of Willie Mullins entries and it might be foolish to ignore the talent at the disposal of Gordon Elliott who has TIGER ROLL [WON 10/1] in his corner.

Big prices are available all over and one of interest although 11yo now is MILANSBAR [5th 25/1] who will stay all day but has no previous experience over these fences, placed in the Midlands National on awful ground though.

RAZ DU MAREE [10th 20/1] won the Welsh National and was running well in this race last year too, respected especially if further rain comes.

18.20 The Pinsent Masons Handicap Hurdle (cond' and amat') (Class 2) 2m ½f

Very much an event after the lord mayors' show, a race for conditional and amateurs to end with and a race that could go to anyone ... 19 runners, not a race for me but will have a little win/place wager on Amour de Nuit - Non Runner with Bryony Frost in the saddle against the field.

Results will be updated later
Hope you have enjoyed a wonderful weekend.
