ROYAL ASCOT 2018. DAY FIVE SATURDAY 23rd JUNE

FINAL DAY ROYAL ASCOT 2018

SATURDAY WEATHER UPDATE -- Mixed weather throughout this period with the risk of rain or possibly heavy showers for Saturday afternoon. Also some dry weather with some sunshine.

Temperatures close to average, perhaps locally warm. with a Very High pollen count forecast too. High temp of 22C

GOING -- GOOD TO FIRM

DAY FIVE
Welcome to this our final day of this season's Royal Ascot festival meeting.

We go once again for Saturday, been a hectic week, I still remember this as the "family day" known as Ascot Heath meeting where everyone could come along and not have to dress up. That's all long gone now and it's just day five for everyone instead. Let's focus on the big races for Saturday;

2:30 -- CHESHAM STAKES (7f)
A listed race for 2yo and just the eleven take the stage for Saturdays' opener. Doesn't appear to have the same depth of quality as recent renewals and Aiden O'Brien runs one here CARDINI who doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary which is rare for such a powerful yard. Godolphin rely on BEYOND REASON while NATALIE'S JOY appears to be the pick of the Mark Johnston trio
.

2:30 Royal Ascot -- Chesham Stakes (7f)
RESULT

1st  --  Arthur Kitt  13/2
2nd  --  Nate the Great  11/1
3rd  --  Duke of Hazzard  25/1

3:05 HARDWICKE STAKES (1m 4f)
This is a Group 2 contest usually farmed by Sir Micheal Stoute and his CRYSTAL OCEAN looks unopposed with just the six runners declared and Rare Rhythm already a non runner reducing us to five.

I'll just watch this one unfold, it's not a better proposition although as we've seen with Cracksman earlier in the week the odds on shots can be beaten. IDAHO is a selection for those looking for the forecast or a placepot selection without the fav.

3:05 Royal Ascot -- Hardwicke Stakes (1m 4f)
RESULT

1st  --  Crystal Ocean  4/7F
2nd  --  Red Verdon  33/1

3.40 WINDSOR CASTLE LISTED STAKES 5f
A huge field now for this listed stakes over the min trip, 28 two year olds take their chance with challenges from Uk, Ireland, France and USA.

Wesley Ward runs the likely fav with MOONLIGHT ROMANCE, and has been having a successful Royal Ascot again so should take this one seriously, might not be much value in such a big field so we will try one or two that have a more attractive odds profile. JAMES WATT (drawn 20) and TIN HAT (6) both about 20/1+.

3:40 Royal Ascot -- Windsor Caste Stakes (5f)
RESULT

1st  --  Soldiers Call  12/1
2nd  --  Sabre  12/1
3rd  --  Dom Carlos  16/1

4:20 DIAMOND JUBILEE STAKES 6f
Today's Group 1 and 19 declared for the sprint, the race worth about £340,000 to the winner only twelve line up though although looks a quality field with an international flavour.

But preference is for the home team with HARRY ANGEL a strong selection on this years form so far. And a long time admirer of SIR DANCEALOT who can belie his price of 33/1.

4:20 Royal Ascot -- Diamond Jubilee Stakes (6f)
RESULT

1st  --  Merchant Navy  4/1
2nd  --  City Light  12/1
3rd  --  Bound for Nowhere  16/1

5:00 -- WOKINGHAM STAKES HANDICAP 6f

It's just not Royal Ascot without a massive field handicap and today we've the Wokingham and 28 runners worth over £100,000 to the winner.

With the market about 7/1 the field this will be impossible to predict and the size of the field means plenty of hard luck stories for sure. The lucky pin picked out VICTORY ANGEL (drawn 9) and TOMMY TAYLOR (15) and with such a wide open field I think that will suffice here ... good luck if you still in the placepot too.

5:00 Royal Ascot -- Wokingham Stakes (6f)
RESULT

1st  --  Bacchus  33/1
2nd  --  Dreamfield  2/1F
3rd  --  Major Jumbo 20/1
4th  --  Tis Marvellous 20/1

5:35 -- QUEEN ALEXANDRA STAKES 2m 6f

We conclude with the longest distance race on the Flat calendar, an event that is often targeted by the National Hunt trainers and although we are well represented with the likes of Gordon Elliott and of course Willie Mullins from Ireland it's probably going to go to the flat trainers with one of the pair FUN MAC who ran well in this last year and COUNT OCTAVE who contested the Queens Vase last year (finished runner up) and steps up in trip once again these are our final picks against the field this year.

5:35 Royal Ascot -- Queen Alexandra Stakes (2m 6f)
RESULT

1st  --  Pallasator  11/2
2nd  --  Renneti  40/1
3rd  --  Count Octave  4/1

That's all for Royal Ascot this year, been difficult as always, but we'll be back next year. For now it's goodbye and a quick return to the normal meetings starting with Pontefract tomorrow and the England vs Panama World Cup match!

BYE BYE FOLKS, SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR.

ROYAL ASCOT 2018. DAY FOUR FRIDAY 22nd JUNE

DAY FOUR ROYAL ASCOT 2018

Friday Weather update -- A good deal of sunshine on Friday all places will probably stay dry with temperatures a high of 22C.

Going -- GOOD TO FIRM

DAY FOUR
Well done to all connected with yesterdays Gold Cup winner STRADAVARIUS, a gutsy display hitting the front in the home straight under Frankie Dettori and fending off the challenge from Vazirabad to win. Hope you finding a few more winners this week, the weather making the selections more difficult to find than it is to get served at the bars !

The opening race is at 2:30 it's the ALBANY STAKES a race for 2yo fillies and has a field of 18 runners declared for a 6f dash. ANGELS HIDEAWAY is one obvious option for the bang in form Gosden / Dettori team. FAIRYLAND is well regarded from the Aiden O'Brien stable and STILLWATER COVE could be speedy coming over from the USA.

2:30 Royal Ascot -- Albany Stakes (6f)
RESULT

1st. Main Edition 7/1
2nd. La Pelosa 12/1
3rd. Fairyland 5/2

The KING EDWARD VII STAKES is next off at 3:05 just the nine declared 3yos' here.

Aiden O'Brien runs 3 of the 9 here and his DELANO ROOSEVELT may be his best chance of a win. WELLS FARHH GO would be a welcome win against the top yards for Tim Easterby
. The Godolphin yard may well have better horses in their ownership than OLD PERSIAN but has picked up a couple of races of late, steps up in class and trip but not overlooked with the stable in good form.

3:05 Royal Ascot -- King Edward VII Stakes (1m 4f)
RESULT

1st. Old Persian 9/2
2nd. Rostropovich 7/1
3rd. Giuseppe Garibaldi 15/2
Caravaggio winning last year
Caravaggio winning the 2017 Commonwealth Cup
A relatively new race at 3:40 is the COMMONWEALTH CUP a GROUP 1 race run over 6f for 3yo's.

22 runners take their chance headed by ABEL HANDY a winner of the Gr 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket last October and INVINCIBLE ARMY looked on the up at Ascot but hasn't been out of the first two places in his last six starts.

In such a big field plenty will need some breaks at the right times, so SOUNDS OF MALI, SIOUX NATION drawn high against MAIN DESIRE (low) with the latter available about 16/1.

3:40 Royal Ascot -- Commonwealth Cup (6f)
RESULT

1st. Eqtidaar 12/1
2nd. Sands Of Mali 15/2
3rd. Emblazoned 12/1
4th. Stone Of Destiny 50/1

At 4:20 it's another fillies event and this time it's around the mile track for 3yo's,THE CORONATION STAKES.

The way BILLESDON BROOK came from last to first to win the 1000 Guineas was impressive and at 661 very unexpected to all bar the connections, a repeat of that here will sure take another Group 1 back to Richard Hannon.

CLEMMIE is clearly talented and well bred, as is the unbeaten TEPPAL but they all have to go some to beat the classic winner.

4:20 Royal Ascot -- Coronation Stakes (1m)
RESULT

1st  --  Alpha Centauri 11/4
2nd  --  Threading  7/1
3rd  --  Veracious 14/1

Penultimate race on Friday is the 1m SANDRINGHAM STAKES the race is due off at 5:00 and has attracted a field of 24 today. First pick here will be DATHAANA a course and distance winner who has four victories in her last five outings. PERFECTION is another of interest at 14/1 for John Gosden only a winner of a Newmarket maiden but must be fancied by the yard to be thrown into this tough race.

Big Outsider alert - BETTY F. Have to follow this one for my friend Beatrix F. 50/1 shot, trained by a shrewd yard and only lightly raced.

5.00 Royal Ascot -- Sandringham Stakes (1m)
RESULT

1st  --  Agrotera  11/2F
2nd  --  Ortiz  66/1
3rd  --  Escape the City 66/1

4th -- Desert Diamond 10/1

Our finale for Friday off at 5:35 is the DUKE OF EDINBURGH stakes over 1m 4f a race that has attracted 20 runners topped by BLAKENEY POINT who was disqualified in her last race at Goodwood but previously winning at Leicester and Newbury has also contested large fields which will be useful in this company.

NAYEL and DASH OF SPICE will be my selections against the field today, both come into this on the back of last time out wins, the latter was impressive winning at Epsom on Derby Day and could easily follow up.

5.35 Royal Ascot -- Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (1m 4f)
RESULT

1st  --  Dash of Spice 7/2F
2nd  --  Sir Chauvelin 33/1
3rd  --  Walton Street 7/1
4th  --  Appeared 8/1

And that's all for Friday, last day tomorrow, hopefully you are doing as well as we are this week despite the heat and headaches.

AFC WIMBLEDON LEAGUE ONE FIXTURES RELEASED. 2018-19 SEASON.

The League One fixtures for 2018-19 season will be published on Thursday 21st June and once available we will update AFC Wimbledon's fixtures here. Having secured another season in the 3rd tier while work continues on the demolition of the old Greyhound stadium work can soon begin on the build of the exciting new stadium on Plough Lane our spiritual home. Delays in the planning and demolition phase will probably mean we will have to start the following season at Kingsmeadow and hopefully move into New Plough Lane later, not a problem for me, it's in progress and will happen that is the most important thing.

The league cup draw has already been made and we are away to Portsmouth in round one, however we'll start our league campaign against Fleetwood Town and the key fixtures for not only myself but also our CEO Erik Samuelson are the games against Sunderland on Saturday 25th August (Home) and Saturday 2nd February (Away) as I hope to make a trip north to friends in Newcastle and make a weekend of it.
